What to look for in a 10 person tent

Size, height, and doors

Many tents that claim they are 10 person, however, that actual space may vary. Because some vendors are just counting spaces by how many sleeping bags they can put in.

You should take a closer look at the actual floor size before making your final decision. The average space per person is the real size that you get when you camping out with such a group of people. It is the final factor that determines how spacious and comfortable you are. For each tent, we have provided this data for your reference.

Another factor is the height, if a tent is high enough you can stand inside freely instead of bending.

The number of doors is another factor of convenience, especially if you have many kids, they want to get in and out frequently, so doors in each room are important so that the kids won’t disturb you.

Black out / Dark Rest technology

A backout tent is implemented by a special coating layer on the tent fabric that blocks out the sunlight and UV that makes the inner space cooler and dark. It is useful on summer days, but also a great feature on winter because it blocks out the sunlight that makes it possible for you to sleep late in the morning or a nap in the middle of the day.

If you are interested in this kind of technology, we have a dedicated article featuring on black out tents, you can read it here.

Ventilation

Ventilation plays an important part when you choose the proper tent. The circulation keeps the inner space cool and dry, it also gives you more oxygen to breath that makes you feel better.

The mesh windows can let the air flow in and keep the bugs out, furthermore, to give better circulation, some tents have a mesh roof that can let air flow freely. You don’t need to worry about it on rainy days, because the tent with this type of design always comes with a rainfly that keeps the water out.

And finally, there are designs of ground vents, this is useful on rainy days, it enables the ability to let air in on rainy days when all other mesh windows are zipped off.

Porch / vestibules

Many big tents come with a porch on the front door that gives you additional space to store gears and shoes. It is often protected by a tarp or an awning. You can put things that are a little dirty here and make the inner room more organized.

Screen room

This is a separate room that has all its walls made of screen mesh, it has an excellent view, and keeps the bugs out, and maintains a great air flow. It is ideal to sit inside with a cup of coffee and enjoy the beauty of nature.

If you are interested in this kind of tent and want one, here is a review we have made before that features tents with screen rooms.

Other features that should take into consideration

Ease of setup

Many tents come with their poles pre-attached with the main frame, this is called instant setup. It can speed up your assembly speed. If you don’t want the tedious setup process, this is exactly the type of tent for you. We have a review that focuses on this type of tent, you can check it here.

Wall pocket

Those are small mesh pockets located on the inner side wall of the tent, it is convenient for you to store your necessities like cell phone or glasses, making your items organized.

Best 10p Tents compared

Best Overall: Coleman weathermaster 10p tent

Coleman is a big player in the tent world and its products endured the scrutiny of market and time. The weathermaster series is very popular and comes with solid quality and great features.

It is spacious enough to accommodate 3 queen sized air beds, the central height is 6’8’’, which is tall enough for most people to stand inside without bent.

One of the most noticeable features is the angled windows, as you can see in the product picture, the mesh window faces the ground and is protected from water on rainy days that lets you get continuous air flow no matter what the weather conditions are.

The hinged door is a unique feature too, you can find it on several Coleman tents. This is convenient to come in and out without worrying about the zipper and meshes. If you are camping out with kids, this would be great.

The weathertech system consists of a series of minor improvements like inverted seams, additional zipper protection from water, strong poles that withstand winds and other treatment that keeps the tent stand dry during rainy days.

We have to say that it is a little better than other tents without those kinds of technologies, but you shouldn’t expect too much. A tent is a tent anyway, don’t rely on it too much in extreme conditions like storms.

There are also convenient designs such as wall pockets for your necessities, and an electric port that lets you run a cord into the tent if you are camping near civilizations or in our backyards. Those are standard designs you can find on modern day tents.

The setup process can take about 20 minutes or more, depending on your experience, the poles are color coded that speeds up the process. This is not an instant setup tent, but considering it is a huge tent, 20 minutes seems not bad.

There is only one thing that might not be good, it is the price, compared with other tents in this review it is a little expensive, but we think it worth the money, this is a solid tent with great features.

It also offers a 6 person one with screen room, we have a detailed review here.

Pros:

  • Tall and spacious
  • Angled window works well on rainy days.
  • Hinged door
  • WeatherTec technology

Cons:

  • A little expensive

Also Great: Ozark 10p 2 room cabin tent

Again it’s an ozark tent, this is a cabin style tent that looks like a real room.

It is spacious enough to fit two queen sized air beds. This is a tall tent with a peak height of 7’2’’, you can stand inside comfortably like in your home, unlike the dome tent, the cabin design with sharp walls gives you more inner space. The actual space you feel will be much bigger than other tents with the same floor size.

This is a freestanding tent, which means it keeps its own shape when you move it around, unlike some tents that need to be staked out to keep its form.

Due to its cabin design, it is vulnerable to harsh wind if you do not stake it well. For most scenarios this should not be a problem.

It includes a room divider to split the inner space into two separate rooms that gives you more privacy. It is useful when you’re camping out with kids or friends with boys and girls.

The other notable feature is the gear loft at the top of the tent that keeps your items organized. It also has an e-port to let you bring an electric cord through if your campground has electricity.

The big mesh windows give good air flow and the rainfly at the top keeps the water out on rainy days.

This is a solid tent with a lot of great features at a reasonable price.

Pros:

  • Tall and Spacious, cabin design
  • Room divider
  • Reasonable price
  • Waterproof
  • Gear loft and E-Port

Cons:

  • Vulnerable on windy days

You may not see many Core tents in our reviews, but they are a great brand and provide tents with solid quality.

This 10 person straight wall cabin is a little similar to the ozark 10 person 2 room cabin tent. The price is a little higher than the ozark one, but Core has a better reputation for quality than Ozark.

It is spacious with cabin design, the straight wall makes it almost feels like it is in your own home, however, it has a price, those designs make it vulnerable on windy days if you do not carefully stake it out.

The peak height is the same as the Ozark one, 86 inch or 7’2’’, this is high enough for human kind. It has a room divider included that you can split the inner space into two separate rooms for more privacy.

Core has its own H2O block technology that gives you better performance on rainy days. It also has an adjustable ground vent that gives you additional air flow on rainy days when all the mesh windows are zipped off.

Other features like gear loft and lantern hook, electric cord access port that is fully closable when not in use. Those are the same configuration as the ozark 10p 2 room cabin tent.
