Are you wondering about all the fuss around the Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent? I was too.

Does this Coleman series live up to the hype? Why has it been the best-selling tent on Amazon in the past year?

I decided to find out. Check out my review and learn more about the Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent. You’ll know what is unique about this tent, the people who should buy it, and whether or not it’s worth your money.

Let’s get started!

Who is it for & Is it worth to buy

The Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent is one of the most popular backpacking tents on Amazon. It’s big enough for two people (although pretty small for two adults) and can be pitched into the ground.

Coleman says the Sundome 2 Person Tent is a three-season tent, but I would advise against it in adverse weather conditions. This tent is waterproof, it is better to be safe than sorry, so I recommend using a waterproof spray.

It has a modern, lightweight design that makes it very easy to set up (This is perfect for beginners). The tent is also compact and folds up into a convenient carrying bag, making it great for backpacking trips. However, its 7.2lb (3.36 kg) weight might be heavy for long distances.

One of the appeals of this tent is the price. It’s very affordable and justifies its price with a clean design, solid construction, and materials that last.

If you are a newbie camper, this tent is a good choice because it’s easy to set up and is comfortable. The low price point also means you can buy it and still have money to purchase other gears.

Pros

  • It is easy to set up.
  • Good storage and an E-Port design
  • Affordable
  • Good ventilation
  • You are getting value for money

Cons

  • Too small for two adults (although Coleman says otherwise. This tent is more suitable for one adult.)
  • It has one door, which can be inconvenient for two people
  • It is a bit heavier than other 2 person tents

A detailed look on Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent

Space and Interior

The Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent is designed to accommodate two people officially. But I would say that it’s suitable for one person only. It is 7 x 5 ft (2.13 x 1.52 cm) which is big enough to sleep two people but not much room to move around.

The tent is best for one adult, one adult, a child, or two kids. On a solo camping trip, you will have floor space for your gear. But the ceiling is just below 5 ft, so you can’t stand without cramping (especially if you are over 6 ft).

The Sundome 2 Person Tent has two windows and two mesh openings. You can see into the tent and also enjoy some fresh air.

There is a zipper/door at the side and two storage pockets inside the tent. The storage pockets were a pain as they tended to dangle over my face. However, I found them helpful in storing my flashlights, batteries, and other small things.

The E-Port design is very clever. You can efficiently run a cord into your tent and prevent leaking or bugs from entering.

Weather Performance

This tent is a three-season tent suitable for warm, dry conditions. It is perfect for summer trips since the overall structure seeks to boost ventilation and keep the interior well-ventilated.

Like many Coleman tents, the Sundome 2 Person Tent comes with a WeatherTech innovation. This feature helps to keep your tent dry in wet weather.

The WeatherTech System has patented welded floors and inverted seams. These combine to keep you safe from dampness and water.

In case of weather changes, it has a ground vent that allows warm air to escape while retaining moisture to keep you cool and dry.

The tent is waterproof, but you can use a waterproof spray on the seams for additional protection.

According to Coleman, this tent can resist wind at up to 35mph. I would say that this tent is more suitable for mild weather conditions. If you are new to camping and don’t have any experience with harsh weather, I highly recommend not using this tent in extreme weather.

The downside of this tent on the weather performance is that it does not come with Dark Room Technology that keeps the tent’s interior cool in hot weather.

Durability

The Sundome 2 Person Tent is made mainly from polyester fabric, which is tough and durable. If you are careful enough, the tent will last a while.

The tent poles are sturdy fiberglass to withstand strong winds and other harsh weather conditions. However, you should be extra careful if you plan to use this tent in heavy winds.

If you are like me, you want more protection for your tent. I invested in a tarp to ensure that I had a shelter to trap the rain. You can do the same to keep your tent shielded from rain and wind.

Ease of Pitching and Set-Up

The instructions are straightforward. You can quickly assemble this tent in minutes (10-15 minutes for newbies). Beginners will appreciate this.

Just follow them, and you will set up your tent with ease. There is no need to worry about the sequence of steps. The illustrations help to ensure that you put all the pieces together correctly.

How Portable Is It?

This tent may not be the easiest to transport since it is intended for camping weekends. Although it is pretty heavy compared to other 2-person tents, it has a handy carry bag with a small packed size.

Price

The Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent is affordable, especially compared to other similar tents. This makes it ideal to buy as your first camping tent.

What are the Alternatives?

Still not impressed by the Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent? Here are some alternatives that might be right for you.

Beespot 2 Person Backpacking Tent

The Beespot 2 Person Backpacking Tent is an excellent alternative to the Sundome as it has two doors with separate vestibules. Also, the price is just slightly higher than the Sundome. In terms of space, it may be a better option than the Sundome.

Naturehike Cloud-up 2 Person Tent

This is another excellent alternative. In comparison with the Sundome, this is an expensive option. But the Naturehike Cloud-up 2 Person Tent has vestibule space, which the Sundome lacks.

ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 2-Person Tent

Another alternative for the Sundome is the Lynx 2-Person Tent from ALPS Mountaineering. It has two doors and vestibules, storage pockets, and a gear loft. Be prepared to spend a few more dollars on this one.

Final Thoughts

The Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent is affordable and ideal for a beginner camper. It comes with WeatherTech System to ensure that your tent will keep you dry and well ventilated.

Although this tent is not suited for harsh weather, it is rugged enough to give you a long life. It’s easy to set up and carry, making it a perfect choice for quick weekend trips or getaways.

I recommend this tent to anyone looking for a cheap, easy-to-setup, relatively spacious tent.
